EMBARC
One of the organizations that works with students at Chicago Academy is EMBARC. "EMBARC is a non-profit organization, providing unique cultural experiences and interactions to high school students from Chicago’s most socially and economically isolated neighborhoods. The program forms partnerships with the public school system as well as local businesses and arts organizations in Chicago’s thriving cultural community" (Taken from embarcchicago.org). I spent a semester with EMBARC as part of a fieldwork project, and saw the positive impacts the program has on students at CAHS. By providing students with educational opportunities as well as cultural experiences, I saw an improvement in both academic work and behavior of the students in my classes who are in the program. Programs like EMBARC are essential in schools where students live in isolated communities because they bridge the gap between students from those communities and surrounding communities. The students in EMBARC have many differences between their ethnicities and the communities they live in, however, the EMBARC program fosters a sense of community within the school.
